Sweden Residence Permit for UK Citizens: How to Move, Work and Get PR

UK citizens need a Swedish residence permit to live in Sweden for more than 90 days. Most Brits qualify in one of three ways: a job offer paying at least SEK 34,470 a month, a partner or family member already living in Sweden, or a permit to look for work after a master's-level degree. After four years on a work permit, you can apply for permanent residence.

Do UK citizens need a Residence Permit for Sweden?

Yes, if you plan to stay longer than 90 days. Since 1 January 2021, British citizens moving to Sweden are treated as non-EU nationals, so you need a residence permit before you move. Visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area don't need one. If you were already living in Sweden before 1 January 2021, the Withdrawal Agreement protects your right to stay and work.

You should hold the uppehållsstatus residence document and carry it with your passport when you travel. Sweden and the UK both allow dual citizenship, so becoming Swedish later doesn't mean giving up your British passport.
 

How to get a residence permit in Sweden: 7 main routes

How you get residency in Sweden depends on why you're moving. Each residence permit for Sweden has its own requirements, and only some lead to permanent residence.
 

 

• Work permit: This is how most British professionals move. Your Swedish employer starts the application online, then you complete your part and pay the SEK 2,200 fee. Since 1 June 2026 your salary must be at least 90% of Sweden's median wage, which means SEK 34,470 a month for applications submitted from 16 June 2026. A few listed occupations have a lower floor of 75% of the median wage (SEK 28,725). Pay and insurance must also match Swedish collective agreements, and if your job will last one year or less you need comprehensive health insurance.
   
• EU Blue Card: If you have a degree-level job paying at least SEK 53,625 a month, the EU Blue Card may suit you better. Since 1 June 2026 it can be granted for up to four years at a time, and since 11 June 2026 holders of a Swedish EU Blue Card can get permanent residence after three consecutive years.
   
• Look for work or start a business: Often called the Sweden job-seeker visa. It's for people with a 60- or 120-credit master's degree, a professional degree of 60–330 credits, or a PhD. You need a valid passport, your degree certificate and list of subjects, bank statements showing at least SEK 13,000 for each month plus money for your journey home, comprehensive health insurance, and a signed power of attorney so the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) can check your degree. You must be outside Sweden when you apply. The permit lasts up to nine months (never longer than your passport is valid) and costs SEK 2,200. Once you find a job, you apply for a work permit.
   
• Joining family: If your partner, spouse or parent lives in Sweden, you can apply to join them. From 1 October 2026 the maintenance requirement for the person in Sweden is higher, and it's now checked again when the family member extends their permit. Permits granted before 1 October 2026 can be extended on the old amount if the extension is applied for by 1 October 2027. Read more: Sweden dependant visa.
   
• Research and doctoral studies: From 11 June 2026, researchers, doctoral students and Swedish EU Blue Card holders can get permanent residence after three consecutive years on that permit, instead of four.
   
• Studies and own business: Time on a student permit doesn't count towards work-based permanent residence (doctoral studies are the exception). For running your own company there's a separate self-employment permit; check Migrationsverket's current requirements.

Eligibility Criteria for a Sweden Residence Permit to Look for Work or Start a Business

To apply for this residence permit, you must meet the following requirements:

• Have a recognised advanced degree: You must have completed a degree equal to a master's degree, professional degree or PhD.
• Have a valid passport: You must hold a valid passport from a country outside the EU/EEA.
• Plan to look for work or start a business: You must intend to find a job or explore business opportunities in Sweden.
• Have enough money: You must be able to support yourself during your stay.
• Have health insurance: You must have comprehensive health insurance that covers you in Sweden for your entire stay.
• Apply from outside Sweden: You must be outside Sweden when applying for this permit.
   

Documents Required for Sweden Residence Permit

You need to prepare the following documents when applying:

• Valid passport: A clear copy showing your personal details, photograph, passport number and validity dates.
• Degree certificate: A certificate confirming that you have completed a qualifying advanced degree.
• Academic transcripts: Documents showing the subjects you studied and your grades.
• Proof of funds: Bank statements or other accepted documents showing that you have at least SEK 13,000 per month to support yourself, along with enough money for your return journey.
• Health insurance: Proof of comprehensive health insurance that covers medical care, hospital treatment, emergency dental care and medical travel back to your home country if needed.
• Power of attorney: A signed document allowing the Swedish Council for Higher Education to check your degree and study documents.
   

How to Move to Sweden from the UK: step by step

Step 1: Pick your route. A job offer, family ties or a master's degree usually decides it.

Step 2: Check the numbers. For a work permit, confirm the offer pays at least SEK 34,470 a month before tax and includes the required insurances.

Step 3: Gather documents. Passport copies (all pages with personal details and stamps), job offer or proof of relationship, and translations into English or Swedish where needed.

Step 4: Apply online. For work permits your employer starts the application in Migrationsverket's e-service; you then add your details and pay the SEK 2,200 fee by card.

Step 5: Visit the embassy if asked. You may need to show your passport or attend an interview.

Step 6: Get your decision and residence permit card. The card is made after your fingerprints and photo are taken.

Step 7: Register in Sweden. If you'll stay one year or longer, register with Skatteverket to get a personnummer, which you need for banking, healthcare and most contracts.
 

Can Family Members Apply for Permanent Residence?

Eligible family members who have held a residence permit to live with you in Sweden for at least three years may apply for permanent residence at the same time as you. If they do not meet the eligibility requirements, they must apply for their own residence permit to continue living with you in Sweden.
 

Is a Swedish Language Test Required for Permanent Residence?

Currently, there is no Swedish language test requirement for permanent residence through the work permit route. However, language and civics requirements apply to Swedish citizenship. Permanent residence and citizenship are separate immigration processes with different eligibility conditions.
 

Important Changes to Sweden's Permanent Residence Rules

Keep the following changes in mind when planning your move or long-term settlement in Sweden:

• From 13 July 2026: Stricter good-conduct checks apply to permanent residence applications.
• From 12 July 2026: Long-term resident status provides a five-year residence permit instead of permanent residence.
• Protection-based permits: People holding asylum-based protection permits can no longer obtain permanent residence under the stated changes.
• Work permit route: The requirement of working in Sweden for four of the previous seven years remains a separate route to permanent residence.
   

From PR to Swedish citizenship: the 8-year rule

From 6 June 2026 the standard residence period for citizenship rose from five to eight years. Adults aged 16 to 66 must also show knowledge of Swedish and Swedish society, and you must support yourself through your own income (about SEK 20,000 a month before tax). The tests are being introduced in stages: a test on Swedish society came first, from August 2026, and Swedish language tests will follow. Sweden allows dual citizenship, as does the UK.
 

Sweden Residence Permit Cost and Processing Time

Fees are paid by card when you apply online and are not refunded if you're refused. Processing time depends on the permit and how complete your application is. For highly qualified jobs, Migrationsverket aims to decide complete applications within 30 days and managed this in more than 80% of cases in 2026. Sweden Residence Permit Latest Updates

Coming up: people extending a work permit granted under the old rules can still use the previous salary requirement (80% of the median wage) if they apply by 1 December 2026. Extension applications registered from 2 December 2026 must meet the 90% rule. The salary floor follows the median wage, which Statistics Sweden updates each June, so check Migrationsverket for the new figure in mid-2027. Further changes to family immigration are proposed for 1 January 2027.

• 33,278 people living in Sweden at the end of 2025 were born in the UK (SCB).
• 935 UK citizens moved to Sweden in 2025: 513 to join family, 319 for work and 31 to study (SCB).

• 20.8% of Sweden's 10.6 million residents were born abroad: 2,210,638 of 10,605,529 at the end of 2025 (SCB).
