UK Work Visa Eligibility

To qualify for a UK work visa, most commonly the Skilled Worker visa, you need a job offer from a Home Office-licensed sponsor and a Certificate of Sponsorship from your employer. The job must meet the required skill level and generally pay at least £41,700 a year or your occupation’s going rate, whichever is higher. You must also demonstrate English proficiency at B2 level.

How the UK Points System Works:

You need 70 points to qualify for the Skilled Worker visa. Sponsorship, job skill level and English proficiency make up 50 mandatory points, while salary or other permitted tradeable criteria cover the remaining 20.

UK Work Visa Requirements and Documents

To apply for a UK work visa, most commonly the Skilled Worker visa, you need a valid passport, a Certificate of Sponsorship reference number, your job details and proof of English proficiency. Depending on your circumstances, you may also need financial evidence, a tuberculosis test certificate or other supporting documents.

• Passport or travel document: A valid document that confirms your identity
• Certificate of Sponsorship: The reference number from your sponsoring employer
• Job details: Your job title, annual salary and occupation code, as listed on your Certificate of Sponsorship
• Proof of English proficiency: B2 level, shown through an approved test or an accepted degree
• Financial evidence: At least £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days, unless your sponsor certifies maintenance
• Tuberculosis test certificate: Required if you apply from a country on the UK’s TB test list
• Criminal record certificate: Required for some roles, such as health, education and social care
• Certified translations: Required for documents not in English or Welsh
   

How to Apply for a UK Work Visa?

To apply for a UK work visa, choose the right visa route, check its requirements, prepare your documents and submit your application through GOV.UK. For a Skilled Worker visa, you must first secure a job offer from a licensed UK sponsor who assigns you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

Step 1: Secure a job offer
Get a job offer from a UK employer licensed to sponsor Skilled Worker applicants.

Step 2: Receive your Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
Your employer assigns you a CoS with details of your sponsored role.

Step 3: Prepare your documents
Gather your passport, proof of English proficiency and financial evidence, if required.

Step 4: Apply online
Submit your application through GOV.UK and pay the visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge, if applicable.

Step 5: Confirm your identity
Use the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attend a biometric appointment, as instructed.

Step 6: Receive your decision
Applications from outside the UK usually take around 3 weeks after you complete the required identity and document checks.

Step 7: Travel to the UK
Travel once your visa is granted and begin your sponsored role.

UK Work Visa Fees and Healthcare Surcharge

UK work visa fees depend on the visa type and duration of stay. A Skilled Worker visa costs £819 for up to 3 years or £1,618 for more than 3 years when applying from outside the UK. Most applicants pay an Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year, while Health and Care Worker visa applicants are exempt.

Global Talent applicants with a prestigious prize pay the full £766 visa fee without an endorsement application. Skilled Worker applications made inside the UK cost £943 for up to 3 years or £1,865 for more than 3 years. Innovator Founder applicants also pay a £1,000 endorsement fee to the endorsing body.
 

UK Work Visa Processing Time

Most UK work visa applications take around 3 weeks when you apply from outside the UK and 8 weeks when you apply from inside the UK.

• Outside the UK: Skilled Worker, Global Business Mobility, Temporary Worker, Global Talent and Innovator Founder applications usually take 3 weeks.
• Inside the UK: Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Innovator Founder and Graduate applications usually take 8 weeks.
• Endorsement routes: Global Talent and Innovator Founder applicants must obtain the required endorsement before applying for the visa. Endorsement processing time is separate from visa processing time.
• Priority services: Priority service usually brings a decision in 5 working days, and super priority by the end of the next working day.

Priority services cost extra and depend on availability for your visa route and application location.
 

UK Work Visa Salary Requirements

The minimum salary for a Skilled Worker visa is £41,700 a year or the going rate for your occupation, whichever is higher. For example, if the going rate for your occupation is £50,000, your salary must generally be at least £50,000.

How to Check Your Minimum Salary:

• Find your occupation code: Ask your employer for the four-digit SOC code for your job.
• Check the going rate: Find your occupation code in the GOV.UK Appendix Skilled Occupations.
• Compare the figures: Your salary must generally meet the higher of £41,700 and the going rate for your occupation.
   

Lower Salary Thresholds:

Some applicants can qualify under alternative salary rules, provided they meet the relevant criteria.

 

English Language Requirements for a UK Work Visa

The English language requirement for a Skilled Worker visa is CEFR B2 level in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

You can prove your English proficiency through:

• Approved English test: Pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from a Home Office-approved provider at B2 level in all four skills.
• Degree qualification: Hold a UK degree or an overseas degree taught in English that Ecctis confirms is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher.
• Nationality: Hold a passport from a recognised majority English-speaking country, such as the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

If you already hold a Skilled Worker visa granted on B1 English, you can keep using B1 when you extend in the same route. Applicants switching from another route, such as the Graduate visa, need B2.
 

UK Work Visas Without a Job Offer

The UK has no general job seeker visa, but several routes allow you to work, or look for work, without a job offer, with stays ranging from 18 months to 5 years.

• Graduate visa: For graduates who complete a UK bachelor’s or master’s degree, allowing a stay of 2 years for applications made by 31 December 2026, or 18 months from 1 January 2027. PhD graduates can stay for 3 years.
• High Potential Individual visa: For graduates of top universities outside the UK on the Global Universities List, allowing a stay of 2 years, or 3 years for PhD graduates.
• Global Talent visa: For leaders or potential leaders in research, arts and culture, or digital technology, requiring an endorsement or a prestigious prize. You can stay for up to 5 years.
• Innovator Founder visa: For entrepreneurs with an endorsed innovative, viable and scalable business idea, allowing a stay of 3 years.
• Youth Mobility Scheme: For people aged 18 to 30, or 18 to 35 for certain nationalities, to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years.

UK Work Visa to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

Skilled Worker visa holders can apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) after 5 years of continuous residence in the UK.

• Residence: Complete 5 years on a qualifying visa, with absences generally limited to 180 days per 12-month period.
• Job and salary: Your sponsor must confirm continued employment and that you meet the applicable salary threshold.
• Life in the UK Test: Pass the test unless exempt.
• English language: Meet the B1 requirement before 26 March 2027, or B2 from that date.
• Other routes: Global Talent and Innovator Founder visas can lead to settlement after 3 years. Graduate, High Potential Individual and Youth Mobility Scheme visas do not lead directly to settlement.

Recent UK Work Visa Changes

UK work visa changes introduced in 2026 affect English language requirements, application fees and salary rules, with further changes scheduled for late 2026 and 2027.

• 8 January 2026: New Skilled Worker, Scale-up Worker and High Potential Individual applicants must meet the B2 English requirement.
• 8 April 2026: The Skilled Worker visa fee rose to £819 for applications from outside the UK lasting up to 3 years, while the ILR fee increased to £3,226.
• Salary compliance: Sponsors must meet the applicable salary requirements for each pay period, subject to the relevant rules and exceptions.
• 31 December 2026: The current interim Temporary Shortage List is scheduled to expire.
• 1 January 2027: The Graduate visa duration for bachelor’s and master’s graduates falls to 18 months. PhD graduates retain 3 years.
• 26 March 2027: The English language requirement for settlement rises to B2 for affected applicants.
• Earned settlement: The proposed increase in the standard settlement qualifying period from 5 to 10 years is not yet law.
