Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a point-based visa for eligible workers, citizens of New Zealand, and British nationals or Hong Kong passport holders. It allows eligible individuals to reside and work in the country permanently. To be considered for Subclass 189, you must score a minimum of 65 points in the Immigration Points Calculator. In order to apply for the visa, you must submit an EOI and get an invitation from Skill Select. You must submit the application within 60 days of receiving an ITA.

The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) offers the following benefits:

  • Reside and work in the country freely without any restrictions
  • Sponsor eligible members of the family
  • Healthcare expenses will be covered by Medicare
  • Access educational loans through HELP (Higher Education Loans Program)
  • Stay in the country for an indefinite time period, as the 5 year visa can be renewed multiple times

Hong Kong Stream

The Hong Kong Stream allows British nationals overseas or Hong Kong passport holders who shown their commitment to reside permanently and work in the country. You are required to have a valid visa and live for at least 4 years to be considered.
