IELTS is an English language test used for study, work, migration and settlement in countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia and other international destinations. The IELTS test type and band score you need depend on your university, employer, professional registration or visa pathway.
Y-Axis IELTS coaching helps you prepare for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training with live classes, practice tests and guidance from experienced trainers. Preparation covers Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, with practical strategies and regular practice to help you improve your band score and meet the requirements of your chosen destination.

Self-study can work with a clear study plan and reliable practice materials. However, IELTS coaching provides structured preparation and expert feedback, which can be especially useful for improving Writing and Speaking.
Some IELTS requirements also specify a minimum score for individual sections, so a strong overall band score may not be enough. Y-Axis IELTS coaching provides trainer feedback on practice tests, helping you identify weak areas, improve your test-taking strategies and prepare effectively for test day.
IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic both assess Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, but they are designed for different purposes. IELTS General Training is commonly used for work, migration and training, while IELTS Academic is mainly used for university admission and professional registration. The right test depends on your study, work or immigration requirements, including specific UK visa routes where IELTS for UKVI may be required.
Choosing the correct test before booking ensures your IELTS result matches the requirements of your chosen university, organisation or visa pathway.
| Feature | IELTS General Training | IELTS Academic |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Work, migration and training | University admission and professional registration |
| Skilled Worker visa | IELTS for UKVI is used to prove English | Not the standard test for this route |
| Student visa (degree level) | Not used for university admission | IELTS Academic can be used to meet the English requirement |
| Reading | Everyday, workplace and general-interest topics | Academic topics |
| Writing | Letters and general-interest essays | Reports, arguments and academic essays |
| Listening | Same test | Same test |
| Speaking | Same test | Same test |
IELTS is widely accepted for study, work and immigration in the UK, Canada, Australia and other international destinations. The IELTS test type and band score you need depend on your university, employer, professional registration or visa pathway.
| Country | IELTS test | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| UK | IELTS for UKVI | Skilled Worker: CEFR B2 in all four skills. Settlement: B1 for specified routes, increasing to B2 from 26 March 2027. |
| Canada | IELTS General Training | Federal Skilled Worker Program: CLB 7 in all four abilities. |
| Australia | IELTS Academic or General Training | Competent: 6.0 in each skill. Proficient: 7.0 in each. Superior: 8.0 in each. |
| Germany | IELTS | Opportunity Card: English at CEFR B2. |
| New Zealand | IELTS | Skilled Migrant Category: 6.5 overall for the principal applicant. |
IELTS for UKVI and standard IELTS have the same test content, format and scoring, but they are used for different purposes. IELTS for UKVI is taken at an approved UKVI test centre with additional security procedures and is required when a UK visa or immigration route requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT). Standard IELTS is commonly used for study, work and professional purposes when a UKVI-approved SELT is not required. If your route requires a SELT, you must book an approved UKVI test.
| Feature | Standard IELTS | IELTS for UKVI |
|---|---|---|
| Test content | Same | Same |
| Format and scoring | Same | Same |
| Test centre | Regular IELTS test centre | Approved IELTS for UKVI test centre |
| Security checks | Standard procedures | Additional security procedures |
| Main use | Study, work and professional purposes | UK visa and immigration routes requiring a SELT |
| Test Report Form | Standard TRF | UKVI-specific TRF |
IELTS assesses four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IELTS Academic and General Training have the same Listening and Speaking sections, while the Reading and Writing sections differ. IELTS for UKVI follows the same test format and scoring as the corresponding Academic or General Training test.
| Section | Duration | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 30 minutes | 40 questions based on four recorded conversations and monologues |
| Reading | 60 minutes | 40 questions based on three reading sections |
| Writing | 60 minutes | Two tasks based on the Academic or General Training format |
| Speaking | 11–14 minutes | A face-to-face interview with three parts |

IELTS scores Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking on a 1–9 band scale. Your overall score is calculated from the four skill scores and reported as a whole or half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, while an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
Listening and Reading each have 40 questions, and your correct answers are converted into a band score. General Training Reading usually requires more correct answers than Academic Reading for the same band score. Writing and Speaking are assessed using specific criteria such as task achievement, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, grammar, fluency and pronunciation.
| Band Score | Listening | Academic Reading | General Training Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Band 8 | 35 | 35 | N/A |
| Band 7 | 30 | 30 | 35 |
| Band 6 | 23 | 23 | 30 |
| Band 5 | 16 | 15 | 23 |
| Band 4 | N/A | N/A | 15 |
Note: These are average numbers of correct answers associated with each band score. The exact number can vary slightly between test versions.
IELTS results are generally valid for two years from the test date, although the university, organisation or immigration authority receiving your result may have its own requirements. IELTS is also moving towards computer-delivered testing, with the transition varying by country. In selected countries, the Writing on Paper option lets you complete the Writing section by hand while taking the other sections on computer.
One Skill Retake allows eligible test takers to retake one skill within 60 days of their original computer-delivered test instead of taking the full test again. UKVI accepts One Skill Retake for IELTS Academic and General Training tests taken on computer in selected locations, subject to test-centre availability and acceptance by the organisation receiving the result.

Step 1: Choose the right test
Choose IELTS Academic or General Training for your study or work requirements. If your UK visa route requires a SELT, choose the approved IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills test specified for your route.
