Canada has a few economic immigration programs through which skilled workers, business owners, investors, and other entrepreneurs from other countries come to Canada and contribute to the country's economy. These individuals are known as economic immigrants, and Canada divides them into 3 categories in order to facilitate them to enter the country, and they are:

  • Immigrants sponsored by family: You must be an individual who was granted permanent residency based on their relationship as a legal spouse, partner, parent or grandparent, dependent child, or any other relative of the Canadian citizen or resident.
  • Refugees: You must be an individual who was issued permanent residency based on a fear of going back to their home country.
  • Other immigrants: You must be an individual who was granted permanent residency based on a program that does not include economic immigrants or immigrants sponsored by family.

Pathways to becoming an economic immigrant

Canadian Express Entry

A UK skilled worker can apply via the Express Entry pathway to enter Canada and stay indefinitely. This pathway is the easiest way to obtain Canadian permanent residency.

The Express Entry has 3 federal economic immigration programs, and they are as follows:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class

You must satisfy the minimum requirements to apply for a particular program under Express Entry. Once you meet the mentioned requirements, you will enter the Express Entry Pool, which will assess you based on various factors.

The Express Entry pathway is highly competitive and only issues an invitation to apply for high-ranking applications. Skilled workers in the UK can get nominated for the Express Entry pathway by one Canadian territory or a Province via the Provincial Nominee Program. Every Canadian province/territory has its individual streams. These streams are immigration programs targeting specific groups as per the requirements of the province. You must meet the requirements of the chosen province or territory to apply for any of the Provincial Nominee Programs via Express Entry.

Economic Programs under Express Entry

The three economic programs under the Express Entry Pathways are as follows:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program: UK skilled workers having sufficient work experience in a skilled profession in the UK or any country out of Canada are eligible to apply via this program.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program: Workers of UK qualified in a skilled trade that includes construction, agriculture, manufacturing and more are eligible to apply through this program.
  • Canadian Experience Class: UK Skilled Workers having skilled work experience of 1 year in Canada in the past 3 years are eligible to apply for this program. It is important for workers to gain work experience while holding a temporary resident permit and having valid authorization to work.
