TOEFL vs IELTS vs PTE Academic: Which Test Should You Take?

TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are all widely accepted for university admission, including by many UK universities. The right test depends on the university and programme you choose, the test format you prefer and whether you need an English test for your visa.

For a UK visa route that requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT), TOEFL is not an approved test. IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI are approved options.

Feature TOEFL iBT IELTS Academic PTE Academic
UK university admission Accepted by many institutions Widely accepted Widely accepted
UK visa routes requiring a SELT Not on the approved list IELTS for UKVI PTE Academic UKVI
Speaking assessment Recorded through a microphone Face-to-face with an examiner Recorded through a microphone
Test format Computer-based Computer or paper, depending on availability Computer-based

Self-Study vs TOEFL Coaching: Which Is Better for TOEFL Preparation?

Self-study gives you flexibility, while TOEFL coaching provides a structured plan, expert guidance and regular feedback. Coaching can be particularly useful for understanding the current TOEFL format, improving weaker sections and getting feedback on Speaking and Writing tasks.

The current TOEFL includes Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview in Speaking, where you respond without preparation time. Y-Axis TOEFL coaching combines live online classes, targeted practice, mock tests and trainer feedback to help you improve across all four sections and work towards the score required by your chosen university.

TOEFL Score Requirements for UK Universities

Most UK universities that accept TOEFL require an overall score of around 90–110, with more competitive programmes often requiring scores at the higher end of this range. The exact score depends on the university, programme and level of study, and some courses also require minimum scores in individual sections.

Some universities have also updated their TOEFL policies following the January 2026 redesign. Oxford currently does not accept tests taken from January 21, 2026, while Cambridge requires an additional Language Centre assessment for qualifying new-format scores. Glasgow has also updated its requirements for the new format.

University Overall
TOEFL Score
New Band Scale (1–6)
University of Oxford 100–110 5.0–5.5
University of Cambridge Varies by course Varies by course
Imperial College London 92–100 4.5–5.0
LSE 100–109 5.0–5.5
University of Glasgow 90–92 Approx. 4.5

Is TOEFL Accepted for UK Visas?

TOEFL iBT is not a UK-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), so it cannot be used when a visa route specifically requires a SELT. Approved options include IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI.

For degree-level study, a UK higher education provider can assess your English ability itself and confirm it on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), so a separate SELT may not be required. The required English level is normally CEFR B2. So check with your university before booking TOEFL to confirm how your English requirement will be assessed for your course and visa.

TOEFL Test Format: What to Expect on Test Day

The redesigned TOEFL iBT takes about 90 minutes and includes four sections: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Reading and Listening are adaptive, so the difficulty of the second module changes according to your performance in the first.

The test includes Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Read an Academic Passage, Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Academic Discussion, Listen and Repeat, and Take an Interview. Speaking tasks require immediate responses, with no preparation time.

Section Duration What to Expect
Reading 27–30 minutes Two adaptive modules covering Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage
Listening 25–29 minutes Two adaptive modules with conversations, announcements and academic talks
Writing 23 minutes Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Academic Discussion
Speaking 8 minutes Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview, with no preparation time

How TOEFL Is Scored: The New 1–6 Band Scale

TOEFL iBT now uses a 1–6 scoring scale in half-point increments, aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Each section receives a score from 1 to 6, and the overall score is the average of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, rounded to the nearest half band. For example, an average of 5.125 results in a 5.0 overall score, while an average of 5.25 results in 5.5.

The new scale was introduced on January 21, 2026. Scores from 4 to 4.5 correspond to B2, 5 to 5.5 to C1, and 6 to C2. During the transition through January 2028, TOEFL score reports also include a comparable overall 0–120 score.

Band Score CEFR Level Comparable 0–120 Score
6.0 C2 114+
5.5 C1 107+
5.0 C1 95+
4.5 B2 86+
4.0 B2 72+
3.5 B1 58+
3.0 B1 44+

TOEFL Validity and Recent Test Changes

TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date, and official scores are typically available about three days after the test. The redesigned TOEFL iBT was introduced on January 21, 2026, with the new 1–6 scoring scale, adaptive Reading and Listening sections, updated task types and a test duration of about 90 minutes.

During the transition through January 2028, TOEFL score reports include both the new 1–6 score and a comparable overall 0–120 score. Universities that continue to publish TOEFL requirements on the previous 0–120 scale can use the comparable score when evaluating your result.

Tips to Improve Your TOEFL Score

Start by checking the TOEFL score your university requires, then build your preparation around each section of the test. Regular practice, mock tests and trainer feedback can help you identify weaker areas and improve your performance.

  • Know your target score: Check the overall score and any section minimums required by your university.
  • Practise Reading and Listening: Get comfortable with the adaptive format and work on accuracy from the first module.
  • Build Speaking confidence: Practise Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview without relying on prepared scripts.
  • Strengthen Writing: Practise Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Academic Discussion, focusing on grammar, structure and clarity.
  • Practise under time limits: Use timed exercises to improve accuracy and pacing.
  • Take mock tests: Measure your performance across all four sections and focus more practice on areas that need improvement.
