About Pearson Test of English (PTE)

PTE (Pearson Test of English) is one of the world's most widely accepted English proficiency tests, recognised by universities, employers and immigration authorities for study, work and immigration purposes. PTE Academic is accepted by universities and colleges across the UK and other popular study destinations such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many European countries. It is also accepted for work and migration pathways in Australia and New Zealand. For UK visa routes that require a Secure English Language Test (SELT), applicants need to take PTE Academic UKVI to meet the English language requirement.

Online PTE Coaching for Study, Work and Permanent Settlement

PTE Academic is a computer-based test covering Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening, with results typically available within 48 hours to 5 business days. It is accepted for study, work and migration pathways in destinations including the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many European countries. In the UK, 99% of universities accept PTE Academic, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London and UCL. For Canadian university and college admission, PTE Academic is accepted, while PTE Core is used for permanent residence and citizenship.

Y-Axis PTE coaching provides live online classes, realistic practice tests, detailed trainer feedback and personalised guidance across all four sections. Choose self-paced, live online or one-to-one coaching and prepare for the score required for your university, visa or immigration pathway.

Self-Study vs PTE Coaching: Which Is Better for PTE Preparation?

Self-study gives you the flexibility to prepare at your own pace, but it can be difficult to assess your own Speaking and Writing performance. PTE scoring considers areas such as content, pronunciation, oral fluency, grammar and vocabulary, making expert feedback useful when you are working towards a specific score. Some universities and visa routes also set minimum scores for individual skills, so achieving the required overall score may not be enough.

Y-Axis PTE coaching provides live online classes, realistic practice tests and trainer feedback across Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening, helping you identify weaker areas, improve your performance and prepare for the score required for your pathway.

PTE Academic vs PTE Academic UKVI vs PTE Core: Which Test Do You Need?

PTE Academic is generally used for university and college admission, PTE Academic UKVI is used for UK visa routes that require a Secure English Language Test (SELT), and PTE Core is used for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship. Since each test is intended for a different purpose, check which version your university, visa or immigration pathway requires before booking to make sure you take the right test.

Feature PTE Academic PTE Academic UKVI PTE Core
Main purpose University and college admission UK visa routes requiring a SELT Canadian permanent residence and citizenship
English tested Academic English Same test as PTE Academic General English
UK visa routes requiring a SELT Not accepted Accepted Not accepted
Canadian PR and citizenship Not accepted Not accepted Accepted

PTE Score Requirements for UK Universities

UK universities typically require PTE Academic scores of 43–50 for foundation and pathway programmes, 50–65 for undergraduate courses and 58–70 for postgraduate courses. More competitive programmes may require 62–76 or higher. PTE Academic is accepted by leading UK universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL, LSE, King’s College London and Warwick.

Requirements can also vary by course, with some programmes setting higher overall scores or minimum scores for Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening.

Programme Level PTE Academic Score
Foundation / pathway programmes 43–50
Undergraduate 50–65
Postgraduate 58–70
Highly competitive programmes 62–76+

PTE Score Requirements for UK Visas

UK visa English requirements range from CEFR A1 to B2, depending on the route. PTE Academic UKVI is used for UK routes requiring a four-skill SELT, while PTE Home A1, A2 and B1 are speaking-and-listening tests used for specific family, settlement and citizenship routes. A degree-level Student visa and new Skilled Worker applications require B2 (PTE score 59 in each skill), while a below-degree Student visa requires B1 (PTE score 43 in each skill).

UK Visa Route Test Required English Level / PTE Requirement
Student visa – degree level and above PTE Academic / PTE Academic UKVI* B2 – 59 in each skill
Student visa – below degree level PTE Academic UKVI B1 – 43 in each skill
Skilled Worker – new applications PTE Academic UKVI B2 – 59 in each skill
Skilled Worker – eligible extensions/updates No new test if you already met B1 on your current visa B1
Family / partner visa – first application PTE Home A1 A1 – Pass
Family / partner visa – extension PTE Home A2 A2 – Pass
Settlement / citizenship PTE Home B1 B1 – Pass

*For degree-level Student visa applications, the test you need depends on your university and whether it can assess your English language skills itself.

Top Countries Accepting PTE for Study, Work and Immigration

PTE is accepted for study, work and immigration in countries including the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, but the required test and score depend on the country and type of application. In the UK, PTE Academic is accepted for university admission, while PTE Academic UKVI is used for visa routes requiring a SELT.

For Canada, PTE Academic is accepted for university and college admission, while PTE Core is used for immigration pathways. Australia and New Zealand accept PTE Academic for study and skilled migration pathways, with score requirements varying by visa or programme.

Country PTE Test Score Requirement
Canada PTE Academic for study; PTE Core for immigration Study: 45–80, depending on the programme.

PR/Citizenship: PTE Core
Australia PTE Academic Skilled migration: 47–54 per skill for Competent English, 58–76 per skill for Proficient English, and 69–88 per skill for Superior English
New Zealand PTE Academic Skilled residence: 58 overall for the main applicant; 36 overall for a partner or dependent aged 16 or over
UK PTE Academic / PTE Academic UKVI & PTE Home for family and settlement routes Skilled Worker: 59 in each skill (B2) for new applications.

Student visa: 59 in each skill (B2) at degree level and 43 in each skill (B1) below degree level where a SELT is required.

Family/partner: PTE Home A1 for the first application and A2 for the relevant extension. Settlement/citizenship: PTE Home B1.

How PTE Is Scored: Score Scale and CEFR Levels

PTE Academic scores range from 10 to 90, with separate scores for Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening, as well as an overall score. Your overall result does not always tell the full story because some universities, visa routes and immigration programmes also require minimum scores in individual skills.

PTE Academic scores can also be compared with CEFR levels, from A1 to C2, to indicate your level of English proficiency. PTE Home tests use a Pass or Fail result rather than a numerical score because they assess Speaking and Listening for specific UK visa routes.

PTE Academic Score CEFR Level
85–90 C2
76–84 C1
59–75 B2
43–58 B1
30–42 A2
10–29 A1

PTE Test Format: What to Expect on Test Day

PTE Academic takes around two hours and is completed in a single computer-based test. It covers Speaking and Writing, Reading, and Listening, with each section containing different question types designed to assess your English skills. PTE Academic UKVI follows the same test format, timing and question types as PTE Academic, so the same preparation applies to both versions.

Section Duration What to Expect
Speaking and Writing 76–84 minutes Personal introduction, speaking tasks and writing tasks, including Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation
Reading 29–30 minutes Fill in the blanks, multiple-choice questions and paragraph reordering
Listening 30–43 minutes Summarize Spoken Text, multiple-choice questions and dictation-style tasks

PTE Validity and Recent Test Changes

PTE Academic results are typically available within 48 hours, although some results can take up to 5 business days, and scores are generally valid for two years from the test date. Universities, employers and immigration authorities may have their own rules about how long they accept a PTE score.

The PTE Academic format now includes newer question types such as Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. There is no mandatory waiting period between PTE attempts, so you can book another test when a suitable test date is available.

Tips to Improve Your PTE Score

Improving your PTE score takes regular practice across Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening, with extra attention to the areas where you lose marks. Practise the different question types, manage your time during the test and review your mistakes to improve your performance.

  • Set your target score: Start with the PTE score required by your university, visa or immigration pathway.
  • Practise Speaking and Writing: Work on pronunciation, fluency, grammar, vocabulary and clear response structure. Avoid relying heavily on memorised responses.
  • Strengthen Reading and Listening: Practise question types regularly and work on accuracy, comprehension and managing time.
  • Practise under timed conditions: Complete questions within the actual time limits to improve speed and accuracy.
  • Review every mistake: Identify repeated issues in grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary or comprehension and practise them again.
  • Use regular mock tests: Track your scores across all four skills and focus your next study sessions on the areas that need improvement.
