How OET Is Scored: Grades and the 0–500 Scale

OET scores Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking separately on a 0–500 scale in 10-point increments, with each score mapped to a letter grade from A to E. There is no overall OET score, so you must achieve the required grade in each sub-test for your chosen UK regulator.

Grade B (350) is commonly required for UK healthcare registration. The NMC accepts Grade C+ (300) in Writing for nurses, while the GMC and GDC require Grade B (350) in all four sub-tests. OET Speaking is assessed on language criteria such as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, as well as clinical communication skills such as relationship-building, understanding and providing information.
 

 

OET Validity and Recent Test Changes

OET results are generally valid for two years from the test date, although the period accepted for UK registration can vary by regulator and registration pathway. Results are usually released sooner for computer-based tests than paper-based tests, and you can request a remark of selected sub-tests within the applicable review period.

For UK registration, some regulators also allow scores from different test sittings to be combined. The GPhC and HCPC allow certain scores from two sittings within six months, subject to their individual requirements.
