Canada has announced a new support program, the PASS (Pre-Arrival and Post-Arrival Supports and Services). This program offers mentorship, language training, licensure, and job search assistance. International nurses must receive approval from the IRCC for PR and complete a recognized nursing program in their home country to qualify for the program.

A recent StatCan report shows that a majority of immigrants in Canada obtain homeownership by the sixth year of moving there. Canada has announced yet another list of priority sectors and occupations for RCIP. Claresholm, in Alberta, is the next Canadian town to release the priority sectors and occupations for the new PR pathway. Claresholm has been allocated 30 slots for the year 2025 and plans to assign 3 slots for each month of the year. The rest of the slots will be allotted for the year-end.

North Okanagan–Shuswap, a district in British Columbia, is the next to announce the list of priority sectors and occupations for the new PR pathway. Individuals looking to apply for RCIP must have an eligible job offer from a designated Canadian employer and can apply for the program during the below five intakes:

Canadian city Thunder Bay released the eligible sectors and occupations list for the new PR pathway, RCIP (Rural Community Immigration Pilot). Special work permit announced for Manitoba PNP candidates. Check your eligibility!

Canada announced a work permit for selective Manitoba PNP candidates. Eligible candidates who meet the criteria will be issued a special Manitoba-specific work permit, valid for up to 2 years. To qualify, Manitoba PNP candidates must have:

  • Been residing in Manitoba since January 15, 2025
  • A valid work permit that will expire in 45 days (or) has previously had a work permit that expired in 2024 or 2025.
  • A valid Manitoba PNP Expression of Interest (EOI) profile
  • Employment letter from your existing employer in Manitoba

Following the release of the first set of priority sectors on April 9, 2025, two more Canadian communities, Brandon and Sault Ste Marie, have released the second set of priority sectors for the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP). Canada announced two new permanent residence pathways, the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP) and the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot (FCIP), on January 30, 2025. Canada Releases LMIA-exempt Work Permit Quotas for 2025

IEC has announced the LMIA-exempt work permit quotas for 2025. Youth from countries with bilateral youth mobility agreements (bYMAs) with Canada can obtain a work permit under the Working Holiday category, the Young Professionals category, and the International Co-op categories of IEC. To qualify, applicants must be 18-35 years of age.

Canada will welcome eligible professionals under the Francophone Community Immigration Pilot (FCIP) and Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP). Canada Announces Changes to the Super Visa Requirements

IRCC announced revisions to the requirements for the Canada Super Visa. According to the new changes, health insurance bought outside Canada will be valid when applying for the Super Visa, compared to the previous policy, where the applicant had to purchase health insurance from a provider in Canada. The changes expanded the pool of options and will ease the reunification of families.

The medical coverage taken outside Canada must fulfill the following for it to be valid: 

  • Must be issued by a company that the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions authorizes  
  • Listed in federally regulated financial institutions by OSFI
  • Granted under the company's insurance business that is based in Canada

OINP Changes Policies for Physicians under the Foreign Worker Stream

On January 27, 2025, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program announced that Physicians do not require an employment offer to be eligible for the Foreign Worker Stream, provided they fulfill other criteria such as:

  • Eligibility to receive payments for any of the publicly sponsored health services
  • Be registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario with a certificate in any of the below categories:

IRCC Announces Open Work Permit Extension for PNP Candidates

Canadian Open work permit’s validity has been extended to 2 years for Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates. IRCC Releases TEER 2 and 3 Jobs Eligible for Spousal open work permit

On January 14, 2025, IRCC announced that only the spouses of foreign workers in TEER 0, TEER 1, or selective TEER 2 & 3 occupations can apply for a Spousal open work permit. The Canadian Government has released the list of TEER 2 and TEER 3 occupations eligible for a spousal open work permit. The changes were effective from January 21, 2025.

Major Express Entry Changes to Expect in 2025

IRCC will be introducing new changes to the Express Entry system this year. The list of Express Entry changes to take effect in 2025 is as follows:

  • Express Entry applicants with a valid job offer will no longer receive additional CRS points starting in spring 2025.
  • The Federal Economic Priorities and In-Canada Focus are the two new sub-categories that will replace the Federal High Skilled (FHS) Allocations.

Canada is set to introduce stricter rules for families of international students and workers who want to apply for an Open work permit. IRCC Expands fields of study under Canada PGWP in 2025

IRCC added one more eligible field of study for Canada’s Postgraduate Work Visa (PGWP). The Canadian Government had earlier, in October 2024, segregated the PGWP fields of study requirements into five main categories: Agriculture and agri-food, Healthcare, STEM, Trade, and Transport. IRCC has now added “Education” as the sixth field of study and has classified the PGWP-eligible programs using the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP).

Removal of points for LMIA-based Job offer to be effective from Spring 2025

IRCC has officially announced that the removal of LMIA-job offer points through the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) will be implemented starting in Spring 2025. IRCC to eliminate LMIA-based job offer points from the Express Entry system

According to Marc Miller's statement on December 17, 2024, IRCC will eliminate the LMIA-based job offer points from Express Entry's Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to stop and prevent LMIA fraud. A final date for when it will come into effect has yet to be announced, until which Express Entry applicants can continue receiving points for the LMIA-based employment offer.

Manitoba PNP Draw issues 399 LAAs

The latest MPNP draw on December 18, 2024, granted eligible candidates 399 Letters of Advice to Apply (LAAs). The invitations were issued via the International Education Stream and Skilled Worker Overseas streams. The minimum score required to qualify for the draw was 630.

Canada Releases New PR pathway for French-Speaking Professionals 

IRCC released information about the eligibility criteria for the new pathway for French-speaking professionals starting in 2025. The new Francophone Community Immigration Class (FCIC) program allows French speakers to apply for Canada PR. Interested applicants would require recommendations and a valid job offer to qualify for the pathway. The Francophone Community Immigration Class will be valid for 5 years.

IRCC Announces the Eligibility Criteria for the New Rural Immigration Pathway. 

IRCC announced the eligibility criteria for the Rural Immigration Pathway to Canada PR. According to the guidelines, applicants must fulfill six key eligibility factors to qualify for the immigration program. These factors include language proficiency, work experience, job offer, educational qualifications, proof of funds, and an intent to stay in the country.

Canada allows specific work permit holders to continue studies without student visa

Canada has now confirmed that certain work permit holders under the new Temporary Policy can study in Canada without a study permit. As per the policy, individuals who have applied for a work permit on or before June 7, 2023 can pursue studies in Canada without requiring a student visa. They can study in Canada with student visa exemptions until their work permit expires or until the Temporary Policy ends on June 27, 2026.

IRCC Introduces new changes to International students changing Schools in 2025

IRCC announced new rules for international students looking to switch DLIs (Designated Learning Institutes) starting from 2025. International students can now study in Canada before the issuance of their new study permit, provided they have applied through the study permit extension application. 

Note: Students who applied for a new study permit after November 1,2024 do not have to fulfill the new PGWP requirements.
