The IELTS EXAM (PBT) is conducted 4 times a month and the Computer-Delivered IELTS is conducted more times. It is administered by IDP only. In order to apply for an IELTS test, you can log in to the IDP website and apply for the test online. The Y-Axis Alliance Advisors can also assist you with booking the test slot as per your preferred date, location & time based on availability.
IELTS can be taken as many times as one pleases. There is no limit to the number of IELTS tests that one can take. However, you will need to pay the test fees for each attempt that you take.
A good score in the IELTS exam depends on the purpose of writing the test.
If you have taken the IELTS test for immigration, then a good score depends on the country and the visa category that you have applied for.
For example, if you are applying for an Australian PR, you need to score at least a 6 on each module (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) to be eligible. However, a 6 on each module does not earn you any points for English proficiency. A score of 7 on each module gets you 10 points while a score of 8 on each module gets you 20 points which are the maximum.
If you are applying for studying overseas, then you should get a score as per the country and the University that you are applying for. Most Universities abroad require you to have an overall score of 6 or 6.5 to be eligible to apply.
The Reading and Writing sections are for 60 minutes each. The Speaking test takes about 11 to 14 minutes and is conducted like an interview by an examiner who assesses candidates on fluency, coherence, grammar, accuracy, and pronunciation. The examiner generally conducts the Speaking test in 3 parts and records the entire conversation.
For taking the IELTS exam, your minimum age should be at least 16 years and you must have a valid passport.
Getting a good score in the IELTS exam depends on the purpose of taking it. Suppose you are taking the test for immigration, then a good score depends on the country or visa category you have applied for. For instance, if you are applying for a PR in Australia you must score at least 6 bands in each module to be eligible to apply. Based on the score you get your points in your application. A score of 7 gives you only 10 points while a score of 8 on each module gets you 20 points.
If you have given the IELTS exam to study for a course overseas, then you should get a score that is acceptable to the country or university you are applying for. Most universities require a minimum score of 6 to 6.5 for eligibility to apply for a course.
There is no passing score for IELTS.
People often tend to say that they have “failed” the IELTS test if they do not get the desired score. However, there is no passing or failing in IELTS. Your required score depends on the purpose (immigration, study overseas etc.), country and the visa category that you are applying for.
Most experts believe that attending the common classes of IELTS & General helps in understanding the difference between both the modules and this will help the test taker to prepare effectively to achieve the higher Band.
IELTS-General is accepted for PR or Immigration, whereas IELTS-Academic is accepted for Study abroad. Talk to our Immigration or Study abroad consultants for proper guidance of appearing for General or Academics.

Some of the most effective strategies typically taught in IELTS coaching:
The best online IELTS course depends on your learning style, timeline, and target score. Reputable options include British Council’s English Online: IELTS Coach, IDP’s online IELTS preparation, and structured platforms such as Y-Axis IELTS Coaching, which combines AI-powered mock tests, video strategies, and personalised feedback. Look for courses that offer timed practice tests, trainer interaction, and access to official study materials. The most effective programs allow flexible scheduling, provide comprehensive coverage of Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, and include tailored strategies to help achieve band scores required for study, work, or migration.
IELTS coaching costs in the UK vary depending on the provider, course format, and level of trainer interaction. Group classes typically range between £150 and £400 for short-term preparation packages, while private one-to-one coaching may cost £40–£150 per hour, depending on the instructor’s experience and location. Online alternatives, such as Y-Axis Coaching or British Council’s virtual programs, may be more cost-effective, offering structured lessons, mock tests, and LMS access at competitive rates. Always compare inclusions—such as practice test counts, trainer hours, and access duration—before selecting a course that matches your preparation needs.
Achieving a band 7 in IELTS within one month is possible but depends on your starting English proficiency, study discipline, and access to structured preparation. Candidates with strong intermediate to advanced English skills can focus on exam strategies, timing, and practice tests to improve performance quickly. Intensive coaching, combined with daily study of all four modules, enhances chances of success. Tools like mock tests, feedback sessions, and targeted practice on weak areas are essential. However, beginners may need longer preparation. Consistency, realistic planning, and expert guidance are key to reaching band 7 in a limited timeframe.
IELTS does not have a “pass” or “fail” outcome. Instead, it uses a band scale from 0 to 9, reflecting different levels of English proficiency. A score of 6.5 indicates a competent to good user, with generally effective command of English despite occasional inaccuracies. Whether 6.5 is sufficient depends on the purpose: many universities accept 6.5 for undergraduate or postgraduate admission, though competitive programs may require 7.0 or higher. For migration, requirements vary by country. Thus, IELTS 6.5 is not a failure, but its adequacy depends on institutional or immigration benchmarks.
IELTS band 7.0 corresponds broadly to CEFR level C1 (Advanced), according to official alignment charts published by IELTS. A candidate at this level is considered a “good user” who can communicate effectively, use complex language, and handle demanding academic or professional contexts with minimal difficulty. By contrast, band 5.5–6.5 aligns more closely with B2 (Upper-Intermediate). This equivalence helps universities and immigration authorities map IELTS results to international language standards. Therefore, band 7.0 is not B2 but sits firmly within C1, meeting requirements for many academic and skilled migration pathways.
The primary differences between IELTS Academic and General Training are given in the table below:
Aspect | IELTS Academic | IELTS General Training |
Purpose | For higher education, university admission, and professional registration. | For migration, work, or secondary education in English-speaking countries. |
Reading Module | Passages from academic texts, journals, and research material. | Extracts from notices, workplace documents, newspapers, and everyday materials. |

Speaking Module | Same as General Training. | Same as Academic. |
