Job description

A carpenter must be able to build closets, counters, shelves, cabinets, doors, bulletin boards, windows, wall panels and other related finish carpentry items. The work is mostly physical labour, but mental ability is needed as well. A carpenter must have good math skills to be able to measure correctly. The job involves bending, lifting and some repetitive motions. A carpenter must be able to work with the general public and accommodate their needs. He or she must be able to work from blueprints, sketches and drawings in addition to following verbal and written descriptions to accomplish the job. They must be able to select lumber, materials and supplies; dismantle or demolish and remove designated items prior to the commencement of repairs.

A carpenter must be able to use a variety of power tools and hand tools. Work can be inside or outside and in any kind of weather. Almost all types of businesses have a need for a carpenter eventually. Work can be done in solitary or with a team of other carpenters and supervisors. Most companies that hire carpenters are looking for experience or apprenticeship work or some kind of formal training. Carpenters can have a specialty that they are proficient in, such as cabinetry, or can do general carpentry work.
