German hospitals are facing a shortage of doctors since last few years. There is a need for several thousand additional doctors throughout Germany. The demand will continue to rise in coming years as well because many doctors are going to retire.
In the field of private practice, particularly in eastern Germany and rural areas, it is very difficult to recruit doctors to fill the vacant positions because of non-availability of qualified doctors to take up the position. And the shortage will soon spread to other regions of Germany as well because of retirement of existing experienced doctors.
If one has completed medical training in foreign country, the person is eligible to receive a medical license in Germany provided that the training is equivalent to the German medical training.

The average starting salary for medical graduates is higher than in any other field of study and currently lies at around €49,000 a year. On average, doctors in Germany are paid more than graduates of any other academic discipline.
